My 5 Secrets To Surviving Out Of Home

Do you ever feel the need for just wanting to spend time with family? Well, that is me most days living on the other side of the world. I moved from Australia in June 2017 and having lived in England, Poland and Sweden.

Here are my 5 top tips for living away from home on the other side of the world:

  1. Keeping Yourself Busy

Being bored is something that nobody enjoys. Everybody has different routines and things that they enjoy doing on a daily basis. Living in Sweden I have begun to enjoy heading into Hassleholm’s town centre and enjoying a coffee while doing some work. I’d like to say I am becoming a regular there. Being in a smaller town, I enjoy having the freedom of being able to ride my bike everywhere like the shops, the gym and also to training. Living in Sweden alone gives me a lot of spare time and that allows me to put more energy into my training and becoming better at what I do.

  1. Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle to me is all about what my body consumes, the amount of training and exercise I do, and my overall wellbeing. Everybody has different ideas of how they live and what works best for them, to me having a healthy lifestyle is about doing things I enjoy while knowing what I am doing is helping me improve my nutrition, football, and happiness.

  1. Constant Learning

Like I mentioned in my first point, staying busy is important. Focusing your mind in ways where it can learn and develop is important while staying active. I have recently just started an online nutrition course which is very helpful in my profession because it is giving me a broader understanding of how my body works and the fuel I need to get the best outcome possible. I have found studying to both help open my mind to new things and add something to my daily routine.

  1. Staying In Touch

There is nothing I miss more than being able to spend time with my family, friends, and girlfriend. Not seeing them for months on end can be difficult at times, but that’s the beauty about today’s world. Every morning when I wake up, I always make time to be able to make Skype calls, phone calls and send messages to people back at home. It definitely is hard being away and missing things daily, but there is nothing more that I love then receiving video calls of the family being together and feeling like they are right around the corner from me. It is always nice knowing I have someone to call back home when I need them.

  1. Meeting New People

Meeting new people can sometimes be a little daunting. Meeting new people in a foreign country was something I felt as thought was a little scary and going to be tough, but how my journey has played out so far has made settling here so much easier. Through the football club, I have met player and families who have taken me in and making life easier here in Sweden, so much that I have come across an Australian family living here making it feel like I am back home on occasions. Keeping an open mind and saying yes to new connections has made me feel more at home day to day.

Living out of home not seeing your family at times can be tough, but spending over one year out of home I have learnt ways of keeping myself constantly busy and learning more every day. Making the most of the time and focusing on football is what I will continue to do.
